FAQ

How does it work?

Osteopathy only works because your body can heal itself and is always trying to heal itself. This is one of the fundamental principles of Osteopathy.

Healing can only take place in the right enviroment. We need good flow of healthy clean blood to tissues and organs, and we need good efficient drainage of waste products. A delay in this is the beginning of disease. On a simple level biomechanical alignment is paramount to efficient delivery and removal of fluids.

But what are you doing with your hands?

We use our hands to promote the normal flow of fluids. The normal alignment of structure. The normal motion of tissues.

To feel the minute detail of function in your body we need to be still and listening or sensing with our hands. Its an art. A learned skill. We are obssesive about studying it! We do continued study with the best in the world. Every year!

Sometimes we ease things back into place. Other times we just follow the tinyest motion already present in your tissues. The aim is always to improve function. Promote healing.

Why is it called Osteopathy?

Os means bone. And Pathy means pathology. But bone pathology is not why Dr Still called his science Osteopathy.

"The reason we used the word bone is because it is like the handle of a hoe, it is the principle by which the motion is given to the instrument. We find all the fibres of the body attached to bones, except the nerves. The nerves are somewhat independant of the bones, still, they penetrate all of them, surround them."

When a bone is moved abnormally by a strain or fall, all fibres attached to them are moved too. Some stretched some made looser. Distorting function, flow of fluids, and the ability to heal.
